Explain to your children that violence is never right, even when someone they love is being hurtful and violent. Let them know that neither you nor they are at fault or cause the violence, and that when anyone is being violent, it is important to keep safe.
Teach your children how to get help. For example, teach them to call 911 to contact the police or go to a neighbor’s house or payphone to call for help. Instruct them not to get involved in the argument or fight between you and your partner. Plan a code word to signal to your children that they should get help or leave the house immediately.
Plan with your children how to stay safe and identify a safe place for them where they can go for help. Practice with them how to get out of the house safely such as, which doors, windows or stairs would be best to use. Reassure them that their job is to stay safe, not to protect you.
