911 Information

After all these years we still have many people who call 911 to ask for weather information or the correct time, where the fireworks displays will be or often to ask "what's the non-emergency number? How would you like to have your emergency request for an ambulance delayed because the dispatcher was busy giving another caller information that is easily available in any phone book or from directory assistance? Many people mistakingly call 911 thinking the dispatcher can transfer them to a non-emergency number. Because the 911 phone trunks are completely different from the normal phone lines we can not do this or it would keep that 911 line tied up for the entire time the person is on the non-emergency line!

If you accidentally call 911 by mistake: Stay on the line and let the dispatcher know what happened. We have no way of knowing if you dialed the wrong number or if there is actually an emergency unless we can contact you, so all 911 calls (even hangups) are treated as emergencies. Most of the time a person has dialed the phone again so we have to have an operator break into the line so we can speak with someone and confirm that there is no emergency. In the meantime a police officer is being sent to the address just in case it is an emergency. All of this could be avoided if you just stay on the line and say "Sorry, wrong number."

911 saves lives by saving time. Please dial 911 for emergencies only. The non-emergency number to the police department is 421-8700. We want you to use 911, but not abuse it.

Welcome message from the Chief of Police

Message from the Chief of Police Robert Huddleston

Hello and welcome to the Casa Grande Police Department. The community of Casa Grande is located in Southern Arizona between Phoenix and Tucson on Interstate 10. We have a population of about 48,000 and we have 77 sworn officer positions in our police department. Our community is an active and growing community with many new developments underway at all times. Our city government is supportive of their police department and we continue to grow with the rest of the city. The Casa Grande Police Department is dedicated to the principles of Community Policing, and we devote much of our effort towards reaching out to the members of our community to help them get involved, and to interact in problem solving as well as enforcement activities. These beliefs and efforts are paying off, as the city has experienced a decade long trend of crime reduction. We have also continued to be more aggressive in addressing crimes committed, by requiring more and more detailed investigations and reports, and encouraging physical arrest of identified suspects once probable cause is established. Arrests and case clearances continue to be at an all time high for the department.

Our goals for the Casa Grande Police Department include the continued ability to provide well trained, professional officers for police services to the community, and to continue to interact with our citizens in positive crime prevention efforts.

The Casa Grande Police Department also continues to reach out to the community through numerous crime prevention and educational programs such as Neighborhood Watch, Crime Free Multi-Housing Program, SALT, Silent Witness Night Out Against Crime, Citizen Police Academy, Senior Phone Patrol, and Traffic and Bicycle Safety events. Our programs continue to grow, with increases in volunteer participation, actual block watch groups in the neighborhoods, and increased responsibilities going to our very dedicated and valuable volunteers.

The Casa Grande Police Department is always looking for energetic, community minded individuals to join our ranks as new police officers, civilian staff, or as citizen volunteers. Please give us a call or an e-mail, and let's discuss how we can continue to work together to make Casa Grande a safe, enjoyable community in which to live.

Sincerely,
Robert Huddleston
Chief of Police

Social Hosting Ordinance

Beginning July 1, 2009 Casa Grande has a new ordinance impacting parties and large gatherings, especially if underage drinking occurs.

1. If there is a party in your home and underage drinking or drug use occurs, the adult(s) present can be cited under the social host law. This applies whether the adults knowingly supplied the alcohol or not. This also applies to older peers, friends, siblings etc. who host parties in their parent's absence, or in their own apartment/home.

2. When a party of 5 or more people occurs, and police respond to a complaint for disturbing the peace, they can choose to 'tag' your house as having an 'unruly gathering', and the party host can be cited ($100). The owner of the property will also be notified by mail. If another unruly party occurs within 6 months, the party host can get a larger fine ($500), and the property owner can also be fined. Future offenses escalate the fines. Some landlords may choose to evict their tenants after the first unruly gathering posting.

What can you do?

  • Learn about the new ordinance.

  • Monitor all gatherings where youth are present.

  • Make regular checks to make certain there is no underage drinking or drug use going on.

  • If you plan a large gathering, notify your neighbors ahead of time and give them your contact information. Abide by City noise and traffic ordinances.

  • Make your home a safe place for young and old alike to party safe/party sober.

Below are excerpts from the new ordinance.
