MINUTES
In attendance: Desiree Bender,Kayla Bock, Zoe Cooper, Victor De La Cerda, Jordan Diaz, Briana Diogo, Travis Duran, Katie Gamboa, Krystal Hinz, Courtney Mason, Jessica Piper, Mia Quick, Brock Sgrignoli, Donna McBride, and Jeff Molner. Guests: Kim Kelly, Jocelyn Pinon, Seton Pinon.
A. Call To Order
Travis Duran calls the meeting to order at 10:04 a.m..
B. Pledge of Allegiance
Kayla led the Pledge.
C. Roll Call (update email, telephone listing; requests for excused absence)
Kayla moves to excuse Nate Meyer from today’s meeting. Jordan seconds.
Motion passes.
D. Minutes:
• Briana moves to approve the September 12, 2009 meeting minutes. Katie seconds. Motion passes.
E. Reports
• Teen Center Report and Updates
The Back to School BBQ was a success with about 60 people showing up for the event. Today, Saturday, October 10 is High School Club night. Wednesday, October 14 is the Lock-In from 8:00 p.m. – 7:00 a.m. November 7 will be the Fall Ball from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Also beginning November 4, every Wednesday will be the “New Moon” Book Club.
• Treasurer’s Report/Payment of Claims
Jordan met with the City Finance office to figure out the Youth Commission’s budget. The budget presented at October’s meeting does not reflect the corrections. Jordan reports that the general fund contains approximately $2,800.
• Governor’s Youth Commission Status Report
Victor De La Cerda reports that each committee on the Governor’s Youth Commission is beginning to plan projects and prepare for a publicity campaign.
• National Night Out Debriefing
Karl Montoya reports that this year’s event held the best turnout compared to previous years. Unfortunately the Census Campaign did not attend the event. The Youth Commission volunteered at the Casa Grande Alliance booth when necessary.
• Relay for Life Committee Update
Briana moves to approve an expenditure of $50 for decorations and snacks for the event. Brock seconds. Motion passes. Relay for Life is going to be held at Old Cougar Stadium on Saturday, October 17 from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 a.m. Youth Commission members please sign up online and invite all your friends to join you.
• Halloween Carnival Committee Update
Jordan moves to approve an expenditure of $150 for supplies for the Halloween Carnival Booth. Jessica seconds. Motion passes. Katie asks that the Youth Commission members wear costumes to the event and if you are participating in having a sponge thrown at you, please bring a mask.
• Day of Shredding Discussion
Everything is in place for this event. Youth Commissioners, please be at the bank by 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 24.
• Electric Light Parade Update
Briana reports that a meeting for the Electric Light Parade will occur before the November meeting. Briana also asks that Youth Commission members send her emails with ideas they have for the
float.
F. Old Business
• City Council Session with Commission Discussion
The session with City Council is scheduled for Monday, October 19 at 6:30 p.m. Youth Commission members are urged to be at City Hall by 6:00 p.m.
• Submissions for Casa Grande Television Teen Programming
Donna submitted all the ideas that were sent to her via email. Also a local radio station is interested in having a teen talk show.
G. New Business
• Tour of the Casa Grande City Television Station
Briana moves to table the tour of the Casa Grande City Television Station due to the absence of David Bridger to November 14, 2009 meeting. Desiree seconds. Motion passes.
• Membership Recommendations
By manner of roll call vote, the Casa Grande Youth Commission recommends the nominations of Jocelyn Pinon and Kim Kelly to City Council for approval.
H. Miscellaneous
• November 4 is the Casa Grande Board and Commissions Dinner. Please R.S.V.P. for this event if you plan on attending.
• On October 25, 2009, the Police Department will be holding several candlelight ceremonies for Sergeant Tate Lynch. Donna McBride plans on attending the ceremony at 9:30 p.m. and invites the Commission to join her.
• The Youth Commission received a certificate of participation and thank you for the Day of Playtopia
• Laura Blakeman contacted the Youth Commission and invited us to host a booth at Art in the Alley. Braina made the suggestion of having a City booth not just a commission booth.
• City Manager, Jim Thompson reported City updates to the Commission and also gave recommendations for revising the By-laws of the Commission.
• Victor shares with the Commission about speaker who presented on the topic of domestic violence. Also, Victor informed the Commission that teens are now protected under domestic violence laws while in a relationship.
