FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Community Pride A Focus for APS Box Mural Project (06/06).
The Arts and Humanities Commission has partnered with the CG Mosaic Creative Communities Team on the Arizona Public Service (APS) Utility Box Art Program. The Utility Box Art Project in Casa Grande is the first for APS in the state of Arizona. The program is designed to enhance community spaces by adding works of art to the streetscape on surfaces that are often targeted by graffiti. The Commission has identified five utility boxes throughout the city and a call to artists yielded 12 applicants. Five were chosen to create art that will foster community pride, reflect the city’s culture, and promote positivity.
The selected artists will receive $500 to cover the cost of painting and will have 30 days to complete their work, and the winning artist will be awarded $500 for their submission.
APS has already identified additional boxes for Phase II of the project and the City of Casa Grande has selected city-owned boxes for future murals. The paint used will be outdoor latex paint coated with UV protection sealant to protect the artwork from the sun and keep the art from fading too quickly.
