Over the past two years, Casa Grande has generated significant media attention at the national and international levels with development announcements by Lucid Motors (electric vehicle manufacturer), Attesa Motorsports (2,300 acre development that will include two professional racing venues), and Dreamport Villages (1,500 acre extreme sport themed amusement park). In addition, construction of the PhoenixMart, the 1.5 mil. Square foot international business-to-business sourcing center is well underway and should be completed by the end of 2018.
These four projects combined are projected to create over 30,000 jobs and represent over $5B in capital investment over the next 10 years. In addition, the Attesa Motorsports venue and the Dreamport Villages are expected to attract over 4 million visitors a year.
Casa Grande is a cultural hub in Central Arizona. Named after the Hohokam Casa Grande Ruins National Monument located southeast of the city in Coolidge, AZ, the city was founded in 1879 during the Arizona mining boom (City of Casa Grande Economic Development). Casa Grande was incorporated in 1915 primarily as an agricultural hub once the Arizona mining boom slowed, and the city’s location along the Union Pacific Railroad route helped it to grow throughout the twentieth century.
The city’s proximity to both the cities of Phoenix and Tucson as well as the I-10 and I-8 have made it a major social and economic hub in Pinal County, the third largest county in Arizona. Casa Grande is a growing city with multiple major industrial projects underway and is on pace to continue attracting residents, businesses and industry due to its prime location and climate.
The community of Casa Grande lies in the middle of the Phoenix metropolitan area in terms of both population and median household income (HHI). As of the 2014 census data, the population of Casa Grande is 51,478 with a total workforce of 18,457 and a median HHI of $53,643. The Casa Grande population by gender is 51.5% female and 48.5% male, and the median age is 32 years. The city is home to 18,415 households, 71.8% of which are considered family households (City of Casa Grande Demographics).
The unemployment rate is trending downwards at 5.5% but is still slightly higher than the Arizona average of 5.0% with a job growth rate of 3.18% (Bureau of Labor Statistics). The four most populous races present in Casa Grande by percentage are Caucasian (67.3%), Black or African American (4.6%), American Indian and Alaska Native (4.6%), and Asian (1.8%).
Casa Grande is home to one of the Central Arizona College (CAC) campuses. While CAC is the only college campus located within the city proper, residents of Casa Grande are within an hour of each of the following universities and community colleges: Arizona State University, Chandler/Gilbert Community College, Rio Salado College, GateWay Community College, South Mountain Community College, Phoenix College, Scottsdale Community College, Mesa Community College, Paradise Valley Community College, and Glendale Community College.
Casa Grande Educational Population
Casa Grande is a part of the Phoenix Metropolitan area and is conveniently located midway between Phoenix and Tucson, approximately an hour from each. Further, Casa Grande is two hours from the major Mexico border crossing in Nogales. Both the I-8 and I-10 run through the city of Casa Grande, and the I-8/I-10 interchange is located just south of the downtown corridor providing access to two major truck routes. The Union Pacific Railroad provides rail freight transport to industries located in the city as it runs through the Casa Grande industrial district.
Casa Grande is home to a number of non-governmental organizations working to help the community and its residents thrive. The Boys and Girls Club, The BlackBox Foundation, the United Way of Pinal County, Against Abuse Inc., Horizon Human Services , St. Vincent de Paul Society, Seeds of Hope Youth Organization and Paramount Foundation of Central Arizona are all located in the downtown corridor of Casa Grande providing services to families and residents in need. Further, the Elks Lodge has a location serving Casa Grande residents on Florence blvd., as does the Goodwill Retail & Job Connection Center.
The City of Casa Grande has a Council-Manager governmental structure. It is governed by a mayor, six Council Members, and a City Manager. Mayor Craig McFarland has served the City of Casa Grande since being elected in 2016. The City Council consists of Mayor Pro Tempore Lisa Fitzgibbons, Council Member Dick Powell, Council Member Mary Kortsen, Council Member Matthew Herman, Council Member Donna McBride, Council Member Robert Huddleston (City of Casa Grande City Council). Larry Rains was appointed city manager in 2016 following a fourteen-year career as Finance Director and Deputy City Manager for the City of Casa Grande. Deputy City Manager Steven Weaver has served the City of Casa Grande since being selected by City Manager Larry Rains in March 2017.
