This year has brought about so many changes, not the least of which will be changes in our schools. The Mayor’s Reading Club volunteers have been sharing their love of reading with our students for 22 years. We’re not about to let a virus get in the way!
To minimize the potential for exposure, schools are strictly limiting volunteers in the classroom. Thanks to technology, our students can listen to stories from our volunteers remotely.
We will pre-record reading sessions from as many volunteers as are willing to participate. In the coming weeks, I will schedule a time to meet each volunteer either at the library or another location to record one or two book readings. Recordings will be edited and made available to the schools to share in the classroom. Due to copyright concerns, videos will only be made available to participating schools and only for a limited time.
Many of you are winter residents and you may not be sure when you’ll return to Casa Grande. If you’re able, you’re welcome to create your own recording and send it to me.
Volunteers will not be reading monthly, just once over the course of the school year. If you are looking for an opportunity to give more time, I encourage you to check out the Experience Corps program. AARP Experience Corps Pinal-Casa Grande is a new program launching in October. Tutors will work virtually one-on-one with students who need additional help with reading. Information sessions are scheduled weekly.
