In a unanimous vote on Monday, August 6, the Casa Grande City Council passed a resolution in support of the Homelessness Strategic Plan and Goals developed by the Mayor’s Task Force on Homelessness. Originally formed in November 2017 with the mission to identify and launch proven strategies that will reduce homelessness in Casa Grande, the task force is comprised of 22 representatives from local agencies, churches, and citizens.
“After several meetings with our task force members, it became clear that the dynamics surrounding homelessness are complex, impacting families with children, the mentally ill, victims of domestic violence, veterans, and more,” said Casa Grande Mayor Craig McFarland. “While homelessness is not just a local problem, our community leaders have demonstrated a strong commitment to developing solutions and taking action to reduce homelessness in our region. This is truly a community effort.”
The product of these efforts has been the creation of a strategic plan document, outlining a myriad of goals and objectives to be executed by an existing community group, the Casa Grande Homeless Coalition. The seven goals contained within the strategic plan include affordable housing, temporary shelters and transitional housing, support services and education, public safety, financial, targeted populations, and community engagement, as well as the creation of a Resource Center to be housed at the Peart Center.
The next steps for executing these goals include a public unveiling of the strategic plan, goals, and action items, as well as an official transition of the Mayor’s Task Force on Homelessness to the Casa Grande Homeless Coalition. This will take place with a Kick-Off Meeting on August 29, from 7:00 am to 9:00 am. The meeting will take place in the Council Chambers at City Hall located at 510 E. Florence Boulevard, and a light breakfast will be served. Those who wish to sign up to attend may do so by clicking here.
