The City Clerk’s Office of the City of Casa Grande has received referendum paperwork submitted by the Political Action Committee (PAC) Arizonans for Responsible Development, sponsored by Phoenix based Worker Power. The filing enables the PAC to begin gathering signatures for referendum petitions concerning the Mayor and City Council’s approval of Ordinances related to the annexation and zoning of approximately 1,200 acres contiguous to the existing City limits located near Thornton Road and Interstate 8 for project known as the Project Saguaro Annexation. 

Under Arizona law, a referendum is the process by which voters may seek to reject or overturn a legislative action taken by the Casa Grande City Council. For this referendum effort to proceed, a minimum of 957 valid signatures from qualified electors of the City of Casa Grande must be collected and submitted within 30 days of the filing date. 

If petitions are submitted, the City Clerk’s Office will review and verify them for compliance with applicable legal requirements prior to any election being scheduled. If the petitions are determined to be sufficient, the Ordinances at issue are suspended and the matter will be placed on a future election ballot for voters to decide. If the petitions are not submitted or are insufficient, the Ordinances remain in effect. 

Those individuals collecting signatures for the petitions are not employees of the City of Casa Grande. Circulators are typically engaged or hired by the Political Action Committee sponsoring the referendum.
